“…On your safety information card, you will notice 6 emergency exits…” the young female flight attendant bellowed over the loudspeaker.
“Ok…let’s see…what row am I in? Ah cramped back in 24, that’s one…two…ten rows, way way too many to the ‘nearest’ exit. I’ll get trampled if this thing goes down!”
“…And make SURE to to turn ALL electronic devices OFF or in the no transmit airplane mode,” she added with emphasis.
“Shoot I forgot to do that! Where’s the airplane mode option? We’re moving, I need to turn this thing off so we don’t crash!!! Ok…power button…OFF…done. Whew…”
All the sudden, a few rows in front of me, I notice this apparently deaf idiot still blabbering on his phone, “Yea dude, Vegas was so doped! We gotta play some roulette next time…”
“What the hell is this imbecile doing!? He is going to take the whole plane down! Someone do something!!!”
Terrified, my eyes anxiously dart back and forth trying to formulate a solution. “He is STILL on the PHONE with this senseless jabber!” I mashed the flight attendant call button with my fist in desperation. It is ignored. I look out the window, “We are gaining speed for takeoff. We are going to CRASH!”
“I’m not going to die today; I’m taking matters into my own hands! I’m going to beat the sense out of this buffoon THEN slam his stupid phone into the ground!!!”
Most likely, you have encountered a similar situation of a fellow passenger obliviously talking on their phone when told not to, disregarding your safety. While this is not the ideal situation, it certainly will not cause your plane to crash.
If you’ve ever placed a cell phone next to a speaker or microphone, you probably noticed a screeching noise.
Something like this
In the airplane, talking on your cell phone could have a similar effect on the pilot’s radios. One person on the phone probably wont’t have a noticeable effect. On the other hand 10 or 20 idiots…. yeah that could be a problem. But this screeching noise would only disrupt the pilots’ communications – it would not affect the flight instruments.
The airline industry is very conservative so you are directed to turn off your phone so it eliminates this problem entirely. Shortly after takeoff, those “buffoons” will lose cellular coverage anyway.
But you can be sure, if there are a bunch of idiots yammering on the phone, the crew would be all over them. They don’t like it either, and they are looking out for it.
